Rolling out Matter takes about an hour of admin time. Five steps get every company live: install, add your admins, invite your team, announce Matter, and send the first kudos. After that, turn on the features your plan includes and Matter runs on its own.
Who can use this: Workspace Owners and Admins on every plan. Slack and Microsoft Teams steps are both covered; follow the line for your platform.
Running a trial first? The trial guide for Slack and trial guide for Microsoft Teams walk a pilot group through the same setup in 30 minutes.
The five steps everyone follows
1. Install Matter
Whoever installs Matter becomes the Workspace Owner.
Microsoft Teams: Install Matter in a Microsoft Teams team. Video: Installing Matter in Microsoft Teams. If Matter does not appear in the Teams app store, see Matter isn't showing in the Microsoft Teams App Store.
Want Matter in more than one channel or team? That is Enterprise Grid for Slack or Enterprise Grid for Microsoft Teams.
2. Add your admins
Anyone else who will run Matter (HR, People Ops, team leads) needs to be a Matter Admin to reach workspace settings. It takes a minute: How to add Matter workspace owners and admins.
3. Invite your team
Matter's member list syncs with your channel or team, so adding people there is all it takes. Matter never needs its own member list.
Microsoft Teams: Add people to your Matter team, or add everyone automatically.
Rolling out to a large company? Configure the features below before you invite everyone, so the first thing people see is finished.
4. Announce Matter
Tell people what Matter is and why you chose it, in more than one place: a company meeting, a post in Slack or Teams, and an email. Announce on a Wednesday or Thursday so the first Feedback Friday lands while it is fresh.
Copy and paste announcement: Slack or Microsoft Teams, with sections you keep or delete depending on your plan.
Member training video to share: Slack Pro plan or Basic plan; Microsoft Teams Pro plan or Basic plan.
Slides for an all hands: Launch and rollout deck (Google Slides, makes your own copy).
5. Send the first kudos
Send kudos to as many people as you can on launch day, one to the whole company or several to individuals. A lively feed on day one shows everyone how Matter works, and people start sending their own before you ask. Sending kudos in Slack or Sending kudos in Microsoft Teams.
From here, Matter runs itself: Feedback Friday reminds people to recognize each other every week, and the features below fire on their own once they are set up.
Turn on the features in your plan
Each block says which plan includes it, so skip anything your plan does not have. Every new workspace gets all of them during the 14 day trial. See How much does Matter cost? for the plans.
Recognition (every plan; Celebrations and QR Codes from Basic)
Feedback Friday is on by default. Confirm the day, time and frequency so the first reminder lands the way you want. Feedback Friday guide
Custom kudos: add your company values as kudos types so recognition reinforces the behaviors you care about. Kudos guide
Celebrations (Basic and above): add birthdays and work anniversaries so Matter celebrates them automatically. Members have to be in the channel first, so come back to this after step 3 if you invited people later. Celebrations guide
QR Codes (Basic and above): print a code so customers, guests and teammates without Slack or Teams can give kudos with a scan. QR Codes guide
Rewards (Pro and above)
Coins and rewards are on by default on Pro. Set the coin allowance, choose a funding method and review the reward catalog. Teams that use rewards see the highest participation. Rewards guide
Company Swag: add your logo to a few products so branded swag is in your Company Store on day one. Matter prints and ships every order. Company Swag guide
Spot Awards: give managers a budget for formal awards. Spot Awards guide
Challenges: set a goal based challenge live; the default challenges are a quick start. Challenges guide
Surveys (add on)
Pulse and eNPS surveys: launch one so responses arrive in the first weeks and you can see engagement in analytics. Pulse surveys guide
Onboarding surveys: collect feedback from new hires on a schedule. Onboarding surveys guide
Employee surveys: send a custom survey whenever you need an answer from everyone. Employee surveys guide
Analytics and people data (analytics from Basic; HRIS add on)
Analytics: participation, kudos activity and engagement for the whole workspace, with exports. Analytics guide
HRIS integration: sync people, managers and start dates from your HR system so celebrations and groups stay current. HRIS overview
