Installing Matter in Microsoft Teams

Install Matter in Microsoft Teams in two parts: add Matter to a channel in your team, then install and pin the Matter app for everyone.

Installing Matter in Microsoft Teams has two parts: add Matter to a Teams channel, then install and pin the Matter app for everyone. You can use a standard, private, or shared channel in any team. If your organization restricts app installs, your IT Administrator or Team Owner has to install Matter.

Who can use this: Workspace Owners and Admins on every plan. Microsoft Teams only. Using Slack? See Installing Matter in Slack.

A few important installation notes:

  • You can install Matter in a standard, private, or shared channel of any team. Private and shared channels need Matter added to that channel directly.

  • Some organizations may have app installation restrictions. If this is the case, you'll need to contact your IT Administrator or Team Owner to install Matter. Additionally, you can refer to our Can't install Matter in Microsoft Teams.

Part 1: Adding Matter to a Teams Channel

Option #1: Direct Channel Installation

  1. Go into the desired Teams channel.

  2. Click the + symbol at the top, next to Posts, Files, etc.

  3. In the search bar, type Matter and select Matter.

  4. Click the Add button to install Matter in the channel.

  5. Matter will confirm successful installation by sending a welcome kudos message in the channel.

Option #2: Teams App Store or Matterapp.com

  1. Step 1 is dependent on your starting point.

    1. From the Microsoft Teams app store, go to Apps.

    2. From the web browser, go to Matterapp.com or Teams AppSource.

  2. In the search bar, type Matter and select Matter.

  3. Click the Add button to install Matter in the channel.

  4. Matter will confirm successful installation by sending a welcome kudos message in the channel.

Part 2: Installing and Pinning the Matter App

Important Note: After completing step #1, you'll notice Matter will be added as an app to the far-left sidebar. By default, the Matter home tab is not installed for all users. Your Microsoft Teams admin will need to install and pin the Matter app home for all users.

There are several important benefits to having this completed:

  • Easy access to Matter will increase employee engagement

  • Customize the appearance to be company-branded

  • Employees can easily see their coin balance and redeem rewards

Instructions to Install and Pin the Matter App for Everyone

  1. Have your Microsoft Teams admin install and pin the Matter app home for all users by creating an app policy.

  2. Customize the Matter app home to reflect your company's brand and style. We'd recommend using company social profile assets (e.g., LinkedIn company logo and banner).
