Renaming coins and choosing a coin icon

Admins can rename Matter coins (for example Hammers or Kudos Bucks) and pick an emoji icon in Settings, Rewards, Advanced Settings. The new name shows everywhere coins appear in Slack, Microsoft Teams and the web app, and 10 coins still equal $1.

Workspace Owners and Admins can give Matter coins a name that fits your culture, such as Hammers, Stars or Kudos Bucks, and choose an emoji to go with it. Once saved, every member sees the new name and icon everywhere coins appear: kudos, the Home tab, the rewards store, emails and admin settings. The value does not change: 10 coins, whatever you call them, still equal 1 unit of your base currency.

For an overview of the whole feature, read the Rewards Guide. Related articles: How Matter coins work and Bulk add or remove coins.

Who can use this: Workspace Owners and Admins on the Pro and Enterprise plans, or on any plan during the free trial. Works the same for Slack and Microsoft Teams workspaces.

How to rename coins

  1. Open the Matter web app and go to Settings, then Rewards, then Advanced Settings.

  2. In the Coin Name & Icon card, click Change Coin Name.

  3. Click the Icon button and pick an emoji. Search by name (for example "hammer" or "star") or scroll the categories.

  4. Type the Singular Name. The Plural Name fills in for you; edit it if the plural should be different.

  5. Check the example line under the fields, which shows exactly how the name will read in a kudos.

  6. Click Yes, Change Name.

The change applies right away. The card shows the current name, the singular and plural forms, and the date it was last changed.

Name rules

  • Singular and plural names can each be 1 to 16 characters.

  • Letters in any language, numbers, spaces, apostrophes, periods, hyphens and ampersands are allowed. Other symbols such as # or @ are not.

  • The icon has to be a standard emoji. Custom Slack or Teams emoji and uploaded images are not supported yet. Country flags and skin tone variants are left out so the icon looks the same on every platform.

  • Matter uses the name exactly as you type it, including capitalization.

  • A count of 1 uses the singular name; every other count, including 0, uses the plural.

  • The name does not change how many coins people get. Allowances are set separately.

Where the new name appears

As soon as you save, members and admins see the new name and icon in:

  • New kudos and the Give Kudos dialogs in Slack and Microsoft Teams, including the option to add coins to an existing post

  • The Matter Home tab in Slack or Teams

  • The Matter web app, including past kudos shown there

  • The rewards store and reward emails

  • Survey and challenge reward messages

  • Admin settings, reports and the Bulk Adjust template

What does not change

  • Value and balances. 10 coins always equal 1 unit of your base currency. Balances, allowances, reports and finance exports are unaffected.

  • Messages already sent. Slack and Microsoft Teams messages and emails sent before the rename keep the old name. Matter cannot edit them.

  • The setting itself. The Coin Name & Icon card and its dialog always say "coin", so you and Matter support can always find it.

  • This help center. Articles here say coins. Read "coins" as whatever your workspace calls them.

Going back to Coins

Open Change Coin Name again and click Reset to Coins. That fills in Coin, Coins and the Matter coin icon. Click Yes, Change Name to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I announce the new name to my team automatically?

Not yet. Post a short note in your Matter channel; a line like "Coins are now Hammers 🔨, same value, same rewards" is enough.

Does renaming affect how rewards are billed?

No. Rewards are billed the same way whatever your coins are called. See How are rewards billed?

Can I change the name more than once?

Yes, as often as you like. Each change is recorded with who made it and when.

Can I use a different name on Slack and Teams?

The name is set per workspace, so a workspace on Slack and a workspace on Teams can each have their own.
