Performance Feedback Guide

How performance feedback works in Matter for Slack and Microsoft Teams: turning it on, choosing skills, giving and requesting real time or continuous feedback, and reading your private skill scores.

Written by Brett Hellman

Performance feedback in Matter is skills based feedback between teammates: you pick the skills you want to grow, ask people you trust for feedback on them in Slack, Microsoft Teams or the web app, and Matter turns the ratings into a private skill score you can track over time.

Who can use this: Performance feedback is turned off by default. A workspace Owner or Admin enables it in the web app; once it is on, every member can give and request feedback and manage their own skills.

What is performance feedback?

Kudos say thank you. Performance feedback says how you are doing on a specific skill, with a rating and a note, from someone who works with you. It comes in two forms: real time feedback, given or requested whenever you want, and continuous feedback, where Matter asks a teammate you choose on a schedule (monthly is the recommended cadence) so the feedback keeps coming without anyone remembering to ask.

Feedback is never anonymous, by design, and the skill feedback you receive is private to you.

How performance feedback works

1. An Admin turns it on

Performance features are off by default. Until they are enabled, nobody sees Give Feedback or Request Feedback in Slack, Teams or the web app.

2. Pick your skills

Choose from more than 30 recommended skills or add your own. Three to eight skills is the sweet spot; more than ten slows down how quickly your scores become useful.

3. Give or request feedback

From the Matter app in Slack or Teams, or the web app, click Give Feedback or Request Feedback, choose the person and the skill, and send. For continuous feedback, set a cadence and Matter messages your teammate for you each period.

4. Track your skills

Each skill gets a score, the average of every rating you have received for it, plus a chart of your progress and a filterable history of the feedback behind it.

5. Tidy up

Cancel a continuous feedback request from your Request Status page, or delete a test or unwanted piece of feedback from your Home or Feedback tab (deleting cannot be undone).

Terms to know

  • Real time feedback: feedback given or requested once, whenever you want it.

  • Continuous feedback: a standing request to one teammate that Matter repeats on a cadence you choose.

  • Skill score: the average of all the ratings you have received for a skill. Notes without a rating do not count.

  • Recommended skills: Matter's library of more than 30 skills you can add with one click, alongside custom skills you create.

FAQs

Q: Is performance feedback anonymous?

No. Matter's view is that peer feedback should be transparent so the conversation can continue. Is performance feedback anonymous?

Q: Who can see my skill feedback?

Only you, by signing in to your account. Who you ask and who answers is also private. Is my skill based feedback private?

Q: How often should I ask for continuous feedback?

Monthly is recommended; weekly, every two weeks, every two months and quarterly are also available. How often can I request continuous feedback?

Q: I added skills but see no progress. Why?

A skill only shows on your chart once you have received feedback on it. Ask a teammate for feedback on that skill and it will appear. Why don't I see any progress for my skills?

Q: How do I turn performance feedback off for my workspace?

An Owner or Admin can disable it in the web app, which removes Give Feedback and Request Feedback for everyone. Enabling and disabling performance
