Stop or reduce the messages Matter sends

A table of every automated message Matter sends in Slack and Microsoft Teams, who receives it, and the setting that turns it off or changes its timing.

Written by Brett Hellman

Matter sends a handful of automated messages: Feedback Friday posts, birthday and work anniversary celebrations, reward and coin nudges, survey invitations and a few admin alerts. Every one of them can be turned down or off, either by an Admin for the whole workspace under Settings in the web app, or by the member from the message itself or under Account Settings. This table maps each message to the setting that controls it.

Who can use this: Workspace Owners and Admins change the workspace wide settings; every member can change their own. Works the same for Slack and Microsoft Teams workspaces, with the differences marked.

For everything on this topic, see the Workspace admin collection. Related articles: Feedback Friday Guide and How to disable email activity notifications for all members.

The quickest ways to make Matter quieter

  1. Trim Feedback Friday first. Most channel noise is the ritual: under Settings, Feedback Friday turn off the mid day reminder, the last call, the recap or the @here notifications, or run it every two weeks instead of weekly. Change Feedback Friday message delivery times and Enabling and disabling Feedback Friday.

  2. Turn off activity emails for the whole workspace under Settings, General, Email Activity Notifications. Reward emails still arrive, because they carry the gift card.

  3. Route admin alerts to one person with the Notified Members lists under Settings, Rewards (approvals, coin monitoring, funding) and Settings, Pulse.

  4. Let members opt out themselves. The reminder DMs carry "keep receiving these reminders?" buttons, and Account Settings in the web app holds the personal switches for celebration reminders, Teams participation and emails.

  5. Use the Exclusion Calendar for holidays and company breaks: no celebrations, survey reminders or redemption nudges go out on an exclusion date. Exclusion Calendar.

Microsoft Teams notification settings

In Teams you can also mute Matter at the Teams level: Channel Notifications on the Matter channel, and Notification Settings in the Activity tab. See Adjusting your Microsoft Teams notifications for Matter.

FAQs

Can a member mute Matter entirely?

A member can opt out of every reminder DM and email, set their celebrations to private or off, and choose "Never include me" for Feedback Friday in Teams. Channel posts such as kudos and celebrations for other people are visible to everyone in the channel; to stop seeing those, mute the channel in Slack or Teams.

We want Matter completely silent for a week. What do we do?

Add the dates to the Exclusion Calendar. Feedback Friday, reminders and nudges are skipped on those dates; kudos people send still post. Celebrations that fall on exclusion dates move to the previous business day.

Why am I still getting reward emails after turning off email notifications?

Reward redemption emails are the reward itself (the gift card or link), so they are always delivered. Everything else respects the setting.

Still stuck? Email support@matterapp.com with the message you want to stop and we will point you to the switch.
