Onboarding surveys help you understand how new hires are integrating, aligning with your culture, and gaining confidence during their first weeks and months. With Matter, creating and automating onboarding surveys is simple and takes just a few minutes.

How to Create an Onboarding Survey

1. Create New Survey or Edit Survey Template

  1. Open the Web App.

  2. Click Surveys Manager in the navigation menu, then Onboarding Surveys.

  3. In the Survey Library section, edit one of the four default templates or click the New Survey button in the upper right corner.

2. Survey Details & Send Time

  • Survey Title & Description: Give your survey a clear, recognizable name and a brief explanation of its purpose. This helps new hires understand the context and importance of the survey before they begin.

  • Send Time: Choose when the survey should be delivered. This is defined as the number of days after a new hire’s hire date. For example, setting “7” will send the survey seven days after the hire date.

    • ⚠️ Note: A hire date is a required member property for onboarding surveys. If this information is missing, the survey will not be sent.

3. Build Survey Questions

  • Question Types: Choose how team members respond to each question. We recommend using Agree/Disagree (Likert scale) questions, as these power your Onboarding Effectiveness Score — a key metric for tracking integration, cultural alignment, and confidence. You can also include Multiple Choice or Text response question types.

  • Make Questions Required: Toggle this option to ensure respondents must answer the question before submitting the survey. Required questions help you collect more complete and consistent data.

  • Enable Comments: Allow respondents to add written feedback in addition to their selected answer. Comments provide valuable context behind scores and help you understand the “why” behind responses.

4. Review Survey Details & Save

  • Title: The name of your survey as it will appear to recipients.

  • Send Timing: The number of days after the hire date the survey will be delivered. (For example, “7 days after hire.”)

  • Questions: The total number of questions each recipient will receive.

  • Rewards: The number of Matter coins awarded to each recipient for completing the survey.

Once everything looks good, you have two options:

  • Preview in Slack/Teams: See how the survey will appear to recipients before sending.

  • Save Survey: Finalize your setup and schedule the survey for automatic delivery based on the send timing you selected.
