Base Currency

Learn how to change your workspace's base currency so Matter Coin values and reward store prices are shown in your team's local currency — USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, NZD, CHF, or SGD.

Written by Sam Lepak

By default, Matter Coins are valued at 10 coins = $1 USD. That works great for U.S.-based companies — but if your team is in the UK, Canada, Australia, or elsewhere, seeing coin values in U.S. dollars can cause confusion. Base Currency lets you choose the currency your coins are valued in, so coin values and reward store prices reflect what's familiar to your team.

Once set, your base currency is shown throughout Matter — from the reward store to admin settings.

Why change your base currency?

  • Match your team's local currency — employees see reward prices in the currency they actually use, like 10 coins = £1 or 10 coins = A$1.

  • Remove the mental math — no more converting from USD to understand what a reward is worth.

  • Keep coin values simple — the 10 coins = 1 unit ratio stays the same; only the currency changes.

Supported currencies

  • USD — U.S. Dollar ($)

  • GBP — British Pound (£)

  • EUR — Euro (€)

  • CAD — Canadian Dollar (C$)

  • AUD — Australian Dollar (A$)

  • NZD — New Zealand Dollar (NZ$)

  • CHF — Swiss Franc (Fr)

  • SGD — Singapore Dollar (S$)

What happens when you change your base currency

Before you confirm, here's what to expect:

  • Coins are not converted. Members keep the exact same number of coins — both their coin allowance and earned coins.

  • The value of each coin changes. Each coin becomes worth 0.10 in the new currency instead of the old one. For example, switching from USD to AUD means each coin is worth A$0.10 instead of $0.10 — so the real-world value of everyone's allowance and earned coins will change.

  • Reward store prices update to display in the new currency for all members.

  • Billing stays in USD. Your Matter subscription and funding are unaffected.

💡 Example: 1,000 earned coins are worth $100.00 USD today. After changing your base currency to AUD, those same 1,000 coins are worth A$100.00 — about $69.97 USD at today's exchange rate.

Because coin balances keep their number (not their value), we recommend choosing your base currency early — ideally before your team has earned a significant coin balance.

FAQ

Who can change the base currency? Only Admins can change the base currency for a workspace.

Can I switch back later? Yes — you can change your base currency at any time. Just keep in mind that each change updates the value of everyone's existing coins the same way.

Does this affect how much rewards cost my company? No. All funding stays pegged to USD. Your base currency only changes how coin values and reward store prices are displayed to your team — it doesn't change your billing or funding, which remain in USD.
