We recommend watching our Matter Installation for Slack video guide to get started. There are two parts to the installation:
Installing the Matter App in your Slack Workspace
Adding Matter to a Slack Channel
A few important installation notes:
You can install Matter into any public, private, or shared Slack channel.
Some workspaces may have app installation restrictions. If this is the case, you’ll need to contact your Slack Workspace Owner/Admin to add the Matter App to your Slack Workspace. Slack Help Article for app settings and permissions.
Part 1: Installing the Matter App in your Slack Workspace
Step 1 is dependent on your starting point.
From the web browser, go to Matterapp.com or the Slack App Directory.
From Slack, go to Apps, type
Matter
in the search bar, and select Matter.
Respectively, click Add to Slack (Matterapp.com) or Add (Slack App Directory).
On the authorization page, click Allow to install the Matter app in your Slack workspace.
Note: If you don’t have sufficient installation permission, you will need to request to have Matter installed. We’d recommend adding a message with the installation request.
Once installed, Matter will be added to your Slack workspace in the Apps section and will send you a direct message.
Part 2: Adding Matter to a Slack Channel
Option 1: Add Matter to Existing Public/Private Channel
Go to the existing public/private Slack channel.
Type “
@MatterBot
install” into the channel and click enter.Slack will prompt you to invite MatterBot to the channel, hit Invite Them.
Once installed successfully, Matter will send a welcome kudos in the channel.
Option 2: Create a New Matter Channel
Inside Slack, go to Apps, and then MatterBot.
Go to the Home tab and click the New Matter Channel button.
Name your channel (e.g., #matter, #kudos, #shoutouts).
Add people to the Slack channel and click Next.
Note: You can add individual members or select an entire existing channel, which will add all members of that channel.
Once installed successfully, Matter will send a welcome kudos in the channel.
Important Note: Based on Slack workspace settings, apps may not have permission to create a channel. As a result, we recommend first creating the Slack channel and then using installation Option #1 (see above) to install Matter directly to the channel.
