If Matter won't install in Microsoft Teams, the cause is usually one of five things: Matter isn't visible in your Teams app store because apps need IT approval, a recent admin change hasn't reached Teams yet, an old approval request is stuck, a Microsoft Entra ID setting blocks team owners from granting consent, or an earlier install failed. Work through the fixes below, or send this page to your IT admin.
Who can use this: Workspace Owners and Admins on every plan. Microsoft Teams only.
For an overview of the whole feature, read the Matter setup and rollout guide for Slack and Microsoft Teams. Related articles: Find your Microsoft Teams version and generate logs and Using Matter with Microsoft Copilot.
Common issues and solutions to get Matter installed in Teams
Teams App Store Visibility
If you are unable to find Matter in the App Store within Teams this is because your company has apps blocked by default. Your IT Admin has to manually approve apps for them to be visible and ready for installation. We recommend you contact your IT Admin and request approval for Matter to be allowed in Teams.
Admins can manage apps in the Teams Admin Center under Teams apps, Manage apps.
Caching
After your IT Administrator makes a configuration change, it can take anywhere from 4 to 48 hours before the update is propagated across the Microsoft Teams platform. Wait for the change to apply before trying again.
Pending Requests Stuck in the Requested State
If you requested approval to install Matter, and later your IT Admin approved Matter for your entire organization, it’s possible that your request is still pending. Your IT Admin needs to either approve or delete your request before you can install Matter.
Admins can manage pending requests in the Teams Admin Center under Teams apps, Manage apps.
Microsoft Entra ID setting preventing owners from granting consent
There is a setting in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) that allows team owners to grant consent. This is part of the app install process for Matter. It needs to be enabled, which is the default setting. To learn more about this setting control, see Microsoft's documentation on resource specific consent.
Admins can manage this setting under Enterprise apps, Consent and permissions, User consent settings in the Microsoft Entra admin center.
Faulty Installation
If you have proper installation permissions and are still receiving the error that you do not have the correct permissions, we'd recommend removing Matter altogether from your Teams organization and then reinstalling Matter. This includes the personal app and agent as well. Then, try reinstalling Matter again in the desired team.
To remove Matter from all teams and personal app and agent, go to Apps > Manage Your Apps > Matter > Remove for all items available.
